Aside from the morning after your 21st birthday, New Year’s Day is the most famous and socially acceptable time of the year to sleep until noon and pour yourself a morning cocktail in the form of some combination of bloody Mary and Pepto.
But since New Year’s Eve doesn’t sneak up on you in the same way as that random Wednesday night of pickleback shots with your coworkers, you can plan ahead for the mind-crushing aftermath of all your bad decisions with brunch.
The best hangover brunches are easy to prepare—preferably make-ahead so that most of the physical activity the morning of can be relegated to easy tasks like turning on the oven and pouring orange juice into your mimosa.
I’ve put together some of my favorite hangover brunch dishes that will require just as much brainpower and energy as it takes to log into Seamless web, and a lot less shame than you will experience ordering bagels for delivery from your corner deli. As a bonus, these healthy breakfast recipes are less fatty than something you might accidentally order out of sheer desperation, and you’ll get double the karma points for the New Year by also saving your friends from themselves in these times of extreme hangover hunger and need.
But if you don’t happen to plan for the below deliciousness, the best homemade hangover fall back meal is most definitely toast. And for that my friends, I also have you covered. Last year’s giveaway of this sexy Magimix vision toaster was such a success, I decided to bring it back, this time in a sultry new shade of red.
1. Italian Sausage, Pepper and Onion Frittata
This frittata is quick-cooking and if you saute the sausage, peppers and onions in advance, takes little more to prepare than whisking together some eggs. Better yet, it feeds a crowd.
2. Grits with Old Bay Frizzled Shallots and a Fried Egg
This easy southern breakfast is designed to soak up booze. Just ask any bourbon enthusiast below the Mason-Dixon line. Simple simmer polenta or grits until tender and fry up some eggs to go on top.
This apple pie oatmeal is a little more complicated than heating up the instant Quaker oats. But it’s also much more impressive. You can make the topping and oatmeal in advance and just assemble the morning of.
The batter for these gluten-free carrot cake pancakes benefits from sitting in the fridge to thicken overnight. Fire off a short stack the morning of, and you have the perfect sweet breakfast.
This Mediterranean baked egg dish is super simple. Make the tomato sauce in advance and bake off with the eggs right before your friends arrive.
6. Peanut Butter Banana Smoothies
There’s no easier or healthier hangover breakfast than a smoothie. For our hangover’s sake, I’ve skipped the green goodness and stuck with a classic, comforting combination of peanut butter and banana.
7. Skillet Semi-Sweet Potato Home Fries
This easy carby side uses both sweet and regular potatoes for a healthy twist on the usual greasy diner classic. You can make them in advance and re-crisp in a 425 degree oven right in the skillet.

I can’t remember the last time I had a hangover and have no clue about hangover cures – I would probably choose soup because it cures anything that ails me. 🙂
I love kombucha with chia seeds when I’m hungover. And, even though I’ve never done this, one of my friends says that her foolproof hangover cure is watching Spongebob Squarepants.
