Hors D’oeuvres are probably my favorite category of food. I remember from a very young age my ability at parties to find the door that all the cater waiters would come out of. Then I’d post-up right outside of it and attack, instead of chatting with all the boring adults in the living room.
I’ve been known to embrace similar tactics in adulthood. But now that I’m gluten-free, there are much fewer trays that I’m able to attack. A few Decembers ago, I found this to be an incredibly depressing reality of my new holiday party life. But now I see it as a blessing in disguise.
While standing outside the catering tent at weddings is great as a special event practice, when you have 5 holiday parties in one week, doing so at every single one might cause you to require a triple bypass before the age of 30. Since merriment often means decadence in the form of carbs and calories, I thought it wise for all you conscientious party throwers out there to know about some healthier options. Sure, there’s some cheese and bread involved. But let’s just say, if the trays of my childhood included Brussels sprouts, my mother would not have felt the need to drag me back to the living room where I belonged.
1. Roasted Fingerling Potatoes with Romesco | 2. Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Gruyere Toasts | 3. Smoked Tofu Summer Rolls | 4. Curry Chicken Salad with Endive Leaves | 5. Mashed Avocado and Radish Crostini | 6. Baba Ganoush | 7. Healthy Artichoke Dip with Corn, Cayenne, and Parmesan | 8. Shrimp and Mango Cups
Oh my, everything looks so fresh and bright! Those summer rolls are making me drool. I think that is my all-time favorite item to order when I find myself eating Vietnamese, which isn’t nearly as often as I would like.
And you are such a star! How fun to be in the same issue as my favorite California girl, too?! Hope your holiday season is going well.
awww thanks ali!!! if you make it into the city, you’ll have to try Omai. It’s my favorite Vietnamese. Besides Saigon Grill of course…but the summer rolls and pho are better at Omai.
I was so excited! Katy is my favorite. Thanks for reading.
