I’ve been pretty elusive about why I fell off the grid for two months this summer. It was kind of strange to give birth to Feed Me Phoebe and then leave it shuttered for many more days than it had been alive. But it was a necessary hiatus – one that involved a cross-country food and media adventure. I may have mentioned as much a few months ago before I left, but that was putting it mildly.
The trip was filmed. There was $100,000 at stake. It involved 8 British chefs and 7 other Americans. We started on the Santa Monica pier with no money in our pockets, and just our knives and cooking/hustling skills to get us from city to city, and to trade for food and shelter. The cat’s officially out of the bag, so you can read about it here.
So, yeah. The radio silence was due to the fact that I was busy digging through Whole Foods’ dumpsters and trying to roast a squirrel on the hood of a 4×4. Just kidding! Or am I? Guess you’ll have to tune in. The first two episodes of Chef Race: UK vs. US air on BBC America October 2nd starting at 9pm.
Honestly, I never thought I’d do the reality thing, as much as I ingest Top Chef like crack. But this crazy opportunity came my way, and after leaving Big Girls Small Kitchen to start over from scratch, this type of adventure seemed like just the kind of exhausting crazy eye-opening thing I needed to get back on my feet. Plus, Jamie Oliver was involved. And there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for that man.
So buckle up. Mark your calendar. Check out the sneak peak below. Ignore the creepy British announcer. And see if you can recognize the girl in the green shirt blowing a kiss at her rivals, two seconds after spewing a string of curse words at them.
I’ll be keeping you posted as the premiere nears and blogging my Chef Race re-writes after each episode airs with everything that was actually said and edited out (like that string of curse words), and everything I wish had been said (something less vulgar).
Happy watching!
