New December, same shtick!
Every year as December 31st approaches, I look forward to our own culinary Oscars: the Healthy Hedonist awards. It’s a period of glitz and glamour in which I pour over my Google Analytics data and try to remember how to add and subtract.
Unlike movie season, the front runners usually emerge early in the year, when you’re spending more time searching for healthy recipes. And since I left my excel skills behind at my corporate cubical in 2009, I’m not savvy enough to weight the results according to how many months a recipe has been live.
(Calling all healthy hedonist mathematicians for a solution!)
Still, there are always interesting themes that emerge.
This year was a little different in terms of my work product and may have skewed the trends slightly. One of my goals as I was in the slog of book writing was to work smarter not harder on the blog. As can happen with search engines and social media, there have been some heavy hitting recipes from the early stages of this site–things I never would have predicted like Teriyaki Pork Tenderloin and a simple sausage, pepper and onion frittata.
While I’m always thrilled to see so much traffic pouring into the old favorites, I’ve also become slightly embarrassed at the quality of what new readers find when they arrive here. Not the recipes, of course. But the photography before 2016 has left a lot to be desired.
So this past year, with the help of my friend Haley of Brewing Happiness, I’ve been slowly going through the archives and updating old favorites with new photos and, gasp, a how-to video for how to make each dish!
Which is all to say that many of your favorites of 2019 were in fact your favorites recipes from 2013, 14, 15–dare I say, of all time–albeit with a new haircut.
Next year, I’ll be back to adding more original recipes to the mix. And to make sure some of the new kids on the block get their due time in the spotlight this year, I’ve rounded up some of my favorites below as well.
Before I leave you and we enter a new decade: what recipe requests do you have for next year?? I’d love to get working on them for you in hopes that they get their permanent place in the stars right here in December 2020.
With health and hedonism,
Phoebe
