Unless you’re new around here, you might have noticed it’s been a while since our last episode. In fact, you may have thought you’d never hear from me again.
But NO! I’m popping back into your podcast feed with a very important year of SIBO in review: an update on all the things that have happened in the world of IBS research since we hung up our mics after the end of the 4th and final season of the podcast.
I am so thrilled to have a return guest, the king of SIBO himself, Dr. Mark Pimentel.
If you’re been down the SIBO rabbit hole for a while now, Dr. Pimentel likely needs no introduction. He’s the director of The Pimentel Lab at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, where he researches many pieces of the puzzle related to IBS, gastrointestinal motility and bacterial overgrowths. He’s published dozens of studies on these subjects, and it’s fair to say that much of the data-backed information we’ve covered throughout the 4 seasons of this podcast, has been discovered through Dr. Pimentel’s work.
He was last on the show almost 2 years ago in February 2020, and in that interview he promised that there would be many exciting developments for those with Post-Infectious IBS, Methane overgrowths, and Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO.
So today we’re going to hear a little status update.

Wow! Dr. Pimentel will probably cure Covid too. He is a god. I’m going to keep an eye on his Twitter feed, and this podcast, and hope to hear about a treatment for the CDTB antibodies soon. I have seen some luck from Prolon FMD and Lion’s Mane mushroom.
Sadly, now one of my dogs is suffering from severe constipation, and no natural lifestyle remedies have helped. So I have to worry whether I will go to the bathroom every day, and ALSO whether my dog will as well. 🙁
Thanks for getting our questions answered, Phoebe! Hoping to hear more soon. xoxo
you’re so welcome!
I kind of feel like Dr P evaded the Methane Sibo new treatment question.
In another podcast he talked about the failed Lovastatin trial. When you asked about new Methane treatmnent, he went back to that. What am I missing.
I listened to the whole podcast and I didn’t hear anything new or especially hopeful for methane sibo sufferers.
After developing Celiac Disease 6 years ago and slowly degrading my gut, to 4 years of misery and then getting Lyme disease (now in remision after 9 months of herbal remedies) I underwent MULTIPLE blood tests, stool & breath tests and a Colonoscopy & Endoscopy last month because I was constatntly sick. All to find out… I have SIBO (hydrogen dominant) and Candida overgrowth!
Before I had an answer though my mom told me to go to the best of the best at Cedars Sinai and did research to find Dr. Mark Pimentel. I have an appointment with one of his colleagues next week and after finding this podcast episode I finally have hope that Dr. Pimentel’s team will be able to help me get back to better.
THANK YOU PHOEBE for your podcast and your resources on this condition that so many people have and so many don’t know how to treat. I feel the stars have aligned now and I have the education I need to bring to my doctors and ask the right questions. I just bought your book SIBO Made Simple and am dieting to feel better. I don’t feel alone & there is hope because of all of the amazing research you all are doing & sharing with the world!
Phobe, are the show notes availabe? I am curiois about the date Dr. P mentioned regarding low acid NOT being a culprit of SIBO. Is there a meta analysis?
I got SIBO after I had been on PPIs for 6 months straight, then stopped. Coincidence? I think PPIs contributed to my gut problems.
